Chest Acne: Causes and How to Get Rid of It

No matter where acne pops up on your skin, it is totally unpleasant.

However, there are places we are used to, like acne on the face or head. But when acne pops up on the chest, that is another ball game entirely. It is not only unpleasant, but it can also be confusing and frustrating.

The good news is that there is no reason to worry!

Chest acne, even though it is less common, is easy to treat. So, get comfortable while I explain what causes chest acne and how you can get rid of it completely.

Causes of chest acne

There are several factors that cause chest acne. They include:

  • Hormonal imbalance/fluctuation
  • Dry skin
  • Exposure to the sun rays
  • The use of detergent, perfumes, dyes, or skincare products that irritate your skin
  • Sugary foods
  • Use of comedogenic products (both skincare and makeup)
  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions like heat, cold, etc.

However, you should note that, just like every other form of acne, chest acne is formed when your skin pores get clogged by dead skin cells, excess sebum (natural oil), bacteria, and sweat.

How to get rid of chest acne

Chest acne is just as easy to treat as every other forms of acne, that is, if you are doing it right. Here are some tips that can help you get rid of chest acne.

  1. Keep your body clean at all times

This might seem very obvious but it very important.

You need to shower regularly. The mixture of sweat, dirt, bacteria, and excess oil can clog your skin pores and cause acne.

When you shower, these elements do not stick to your skin and clog your skin pores. Keeping your body clean reduces the chances of chest acne occurring or recurring.

So, make sure you take your bath twice daily, even when the weather is really cold or dry and you are tempted to skip your bath.

Do not use hot water to take your bath. Also, do not stay too long in the shower. It can dry out your skin and cause acne.

  1. Get an anti-acne soap or body wash

If you want to get rid of chest acne, then you have to treat it.

You want to make sure that the soap or body wash you use to take your bath will not only make your body clean, but also treat the acne.

So, go shopping for an anti-acne soap or wash, especially one that contains salicylic acid. This ingredient helps to remove excess oil and dead skin cells from your skin. It also dries out acne.

Apply the wash or soap on your chest as prescribed by the manufacturers and rinse off with lukewarm water.

If you need a 100% safe option, then you must think of the new Seliná Bar Soap.
It’s 100% organic and 100% plant-based.

  1. Apply only non-comedogenic body lotions

Non-comedogenic products are products that do not clog the skin pores.

The last thing you want to do is apply a lotion on your chest that will clog your skin pores. Your body lotion is easily absorbed into your skin and stays on for hours. This means that if you are using a comedogenic lotion, it has a lot of time for it to fully clog your pores.

Non-comedogenic lotions hydrate your skin without causing breakouts.

Also, avoid lotions with ingredients that can irritate your skin. Such lotions will further inflame the acne and make it worse.

  1. Be careful what you expose your skin to

The things you expose your skin to do a lot of damage to your skin.

For example, using a detergent that has fragrance and dye to wash your clothes can be bad for your skin. When that piece of clothing comes in contact with your skin, irritation occurs which may lead to acne.

Also, be careful about the kind of perfume you use. Some perfumes can irritate your skin.

So, if necessary, change your perfumes, your detergent, your skincare product, and any other irritating substance you expose your chest to.

For this to be effective, you need to first be aware of ingredients that cause a negative reaction on your skin and avoid them.

5. Always wear loose and breathable fabrics

It is tempting to always wear body con gowns or tight-fitting clothes. After all, they make us look sexy.

But be careful, that sexy outfit might just be the cause of your chest acne. Make sure you wear clothes that are loose. Friction caused by tight clothes rubbing against your skin can cause acne.

Also, be careful what kind of fabric you wear. Wear breathable fabrics like cotton. Fabrics like nylon, spandex, wool do not give your skin enough space to breathe. Also, they can irritate your skin and make the acne worse.

So, when next you go shopping, look out for loose clothes that are made of cotton.

6. Visit your dermatologist

This is usually not necessary in most cases.

However, in rare occasions, where you have tried all these for about two months and there are no changes, go see your dermatologist.

He/she will help figure out why these solutions are not working and what dermatological procedure will be best in getting rid of the chest acne once and for all.

In conclusion,

If you have chest acne, do not be worried. There are a lot of other people who have chest acne and the good news is that it can be easily treated.

Just follow the tips I gave above. If you have any questions, leave a comment. I will answer as soon as I can.

Cheers!

  1. I really appreciate this ma’am. Thank you. I always look forward to your mails. I have a quick question though, i have this spots that started since NYSC camp, I think it was caused by water, and till now its still there, despite using the normal things I use that clears it. I hope this is nothing serious. What’s your advice and what can I do about it?

    1. Only you can tell if it’s serious or not. I mean, are they just spots? Did they start as spots or what was the process of the spots getting there? Are they painful or itchy? Is it spreading? Are you still having those spots after you left the environment? These are some questions you need to answer to know whether it’s serious or not.

If it’s nothing serious, then you can get a good product that works for hyperpigmentation to get rid of the spots gradually.
