8 Essential Oils to Get Rid of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks pop up on your skin when your skin is stretched more than it normally should be.

They are very harmless, do not cause pain, and can sit on your skin without causing any damage except the fact that they disrupt your skin’s look.

Instead of clean and clear skin, you have red or white lines drawn across your skin. Though harmless, they can be very embarrassing.

If you want a natural way to get rid of stretch marks, then you should consider using essential oils.

Which essential oils can get rid of stretch marks?

There are several oils that can help you get rid of stretch marks if you apply them consistently. Here are some of them:

  1. Sage essential oil

Sage essential oil is gotten from an evergreen perineal plant and is safe to use.

It contains anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and diuretic properties. With these properties, it boosts the blood circulation within your body, which in turn, aids the healing of stretch marks.

  1. Lavender oil

Lavender oil, apart from its unique scent, is well known for its calming qualities. In fact, it is a very popular oil used for aromatherapy. It is extracted from lavender flowers.

This oil has several benefits for your skin. It reduces stress and can aid the healing of wounds and marks. It also aids the increase of collagen production in the skin and forms connective tissues that stimulate the healing of wounds.

It boosts your skin’s healthy by stimulating the growth of new skin cells. Not only is it soothing, but it is also restorative. So, when it comes to stretch marks, lavender oil is one of your go-to essential oils.

  1. Argan oil

Argan oil is a relatively new oil used in skincare and hair care. It is extracted from argan tree kernels.

It helps to increase your skin’s elasticity. It may help to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. You can apply the oil to your skin and also drink it. Doing both can help boost your skin’s elasticity faster.

  1. Rosehip oil

Rosehip oil is gotten from the seeds or fruits of roses. It contains fatty acids that help to improve your skin’s strength and elasticity. It is non-greasy and is a great source of trans-retinoic acid (a natural form of vitamin A that aids faster skin regeneration).

A 2013 study showed that rosehip oil prevented stretch marks in pregnant women from getting severe. It was also effective in preventing new stretch marks from appearing on the skin.

  1. Bitter almond oil

I am not talking about the regular almonds you are used to eating here. Bitter almond oil is a different kind of almond. It is gotten from a different tree and it contains toxic compounds that can cause cyanide poisoning if you drink it.

So, it is only suitable for applying on the skin and preferably in small quantities. A lot about this oil is still uncertain, like if using it in certain amounts is safe. But it is effective in treating and preventing the appearance of stretch marks.

  1. Neroli essential oil

Neroli essential oil is extracted from the flowers of the citrus aurantium tree. This is the same tree that is used to make bitter orange oil.

This oil contains powerful antioxidants which boost the regeneration of new skin cells and improve the appearance of your skin. Not only is it great for reducing the appearance of stretch marks and scars, but it is also used for skin lightening and reducing skin imperfections generally.

  1. Frankincense essential oil

Frankincense oil is one of the older oils, used for centuries for his healing properties.

It is used for treating skin conditions. It contains ferulic acids and vitamins which help to keep your skin healthy. It is made up of antioxidants that help to increase your skin elasticity, reduce aging signs and keep your skin looking youthful.

  1. Patchouli essential oil

Patchouli essential oil is commonly known as a mood booster, but it is also good for healing wounds and fading scars.

Not only is it a great moisturizing agent, it contains antioxidant properties that promote the growth of skin cells and the regeneration of skin tissues. It also stimulates the synthesis of collagen. All these help to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

How to use essential oils for skin?

Essential oils are highly concentrated so they should be used in minute quantities. Since they are very potent, they can easily cause irritations on your skin. It is best that you dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil, shea butter, unscented lotion, or aloe vera gel.

Some carrier oils you can use include coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, etc. With essential oils, all you need is a few drops. For an ounce of carrier oil, you need 15 drops of essential oil.

If you notice irritations like a rash, redness of the skin, itching, hives, etc., then you should stop using it immediately.

You can also carry out a patch test to see if your skin will react to the oil before applying it to large areas of your skin.

To do a patch test, add two drops of essential oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil. Apply the diluted oil to your inner elbow or inner wrist. Leave it on for 24 hours. If you don’t experience any irritation, then it is safe to use.

Bottom line

Essential oils are great for getting rid of stretch marks. You however should be consistent in applying the oil. Apply your diluted essential oil twice daily, after taking your bath in the morning and at night.

Also, be patient to see results. Do not expect an overnight result.

Now over to you…

Have you ever used essentials oils to treat stretch marks? If yes, how was your experience? Did it work? Did you experience skin irritations?
