How to Wash Your Face Properly to Avoid Acne

I am sure some people looked at the headline and felt it was ridiculous.

I mean, we wash our faces every day, right? In fact, we have been doing that since we were kids, so why learn how to do what we already know?

Well, it’s true that we all wash our faces and I am sure you do a good job of it. But the question is, do you wash your face the right way?

It doesn’t matter how effective your anti-acne soap is, if you do not know how to wash your face properly, you will keep on having acne.

When you wash your face, and you do not wash thoroughly or cleanse properly, you leave dirt residue on your skin which can clog your pores and lead to acne.

This is why it is important that you know the right way to wash your face. And that is what I will be discussing today.

So, let’s get started.

How do I wash my face properly?

This is a step by step guide on how you can wash your face the right way. Let’s get started already…

  1. Remove your makeup

This is for the days you apply makeup.

Before you bring your soap or cleanser to your face, you need to first remove your makeup with a makeup remover. Your foundation, eye-makeup are created to last for a long time, and they can be tough to clean with just a cleanser.

So, you should get a makeup remover or makeup removing wipes. Gently rub your finger upwards over your face. Use your fingertips and do not apply too much pressure on your skin.

After you have done that, you can move on to the next step.

  1. Apply a cleanser/soap

The next thing to do is apply your cleanser. This removes all the dirt, dust, and other toxic substances from your face, leaving your face refreshed.

Make sure that you clean your face thoroughly with your palms rubbing through every inch of your face. To make things easier, splash a bit of lukewarm water on your skin before you apply your cleanser or beauty soap.

Make sure that your cleanser and soap are very mild.

While you wash, you should also note:

  • Use the right product for your skin

It is important that you use the right product for your skin. In fact, you could buy products specific to your skin type.

You do not want a cleanser that will compromise your skin type. Stay away from any cleanser that is harsh on your skin. Such cleansers will only strip off the natural oils of your skin and even cause reactions.

  • Do not over-wash your skin

While you want to wash your face and ensure that every part of your skin is clean, you do not want to over-wash it. Washing your skin twice in a day is okay, any more can irritate your skin, and trigger the production of excess oil in your skin.

If you don’t apply makeup or sunscreen, or sweat much during the day, the you can skip the cleanser at night, and just rinse your face. It is nice to give your skin a break from skincare products once in a while.

  • Never use hot or cold water

The temperature of the water you use to wash your face matters. Some people think that hot water opens the skin pores while cold water closes them. The truth is, your skin pores do not have muscles that can open and close.

Stay away from hot water. It strips your body of its natural oils and makes your skin really dry, and this can trigger the production of excess oils in your skin.

Cold water is also a huge NO.

The best bet is to use lukewarm water.

  • Try not to scrub your skin

If you are not exfoliating, you have no business scrubbing your face. Aunties that use sponges to wash their face anytime they take their bath, this is for you.

Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. And exfoliation should happen just thrice in a week.

Scrubbing your face irritates your skin and can cause reactions to occur.

  • Give your neck some cleansing

Do not just stop at your face.

Make sure to also wash your jawline and your neck too. They too have been exposed all day to and toxins and they also need to be cleansed.

  1. Rinse

This might not seem important, but it is.

If you do not rinse your face very well, it is as bad as not washing your face at all – even worse. You leave dirt residue on your face which dry up on your skin, clog your skin pores and cause acne.

So, make sure you get all the soap out. Remember, every step in the washing process has to be done carefully but thoroughly.

  1. Pat with a clean dry towel

If you notice, I did not say rub your face, I pat it.

Rubbing tugs and pulls at your skin, which over time affect the elasticity of your skin. This can lead to wrinkles and make your skin sag.

Make sure you use a clean soft towel to clean your face. Make sure the fabric is soft and CLEAN! You can’t clean your face all nice and then use a dirty towel to ruin all your efforts.

  1. Moisturize your skin!

This might not do anything to clean your face but it is necessary.

It prevents your skin from getting dry after cleansing and it keeps it hydrated.

In conclusion,

Learn to wash your face the proper way.

Just because you have washed your face all your life might not mean you’ve been getting it right. Just read the tips I have given above and apply them. You would have one less reason to worry about acne on your skin.
