5 Natural Oil-free Ways to Moisturize Oily Skin

Having oily skin can be very annoying.

I know applying moisturizer to already oily and shiny skin can seem unnecessary but the truth is, your skin needs moisturizer, no matter the skin type. Some women fear that the moisturizer will make their already oily skin oilier. All you need is the right moisturizer.

Your skin gets exposed to harmful external factors every day like pollution, UV rays of the sun, extreme environmental conditions, etc. Not only that, people with oily skin tend to wash their skin more frequently than normal, in order to get rid of the excess oil on their skin.

All these can damage your skin’s barrier, which makes it hard for your skin to stay protected from external damage. Applying moisturizer can prevent this from happening.

Cleansing your skin without moisturizing can also cause loss of moisture which makes your skin dry. Contrary to what you think, having dry skin is bad news for you. What happens next is your oil glands go into overdrive to make up for the lost natural oils.  They produce more oils than your body needs, which brings you back to where you started from. Your skin starts to look oily again.

Now, you know you need moisturizers. But more importantly, it is best that you use oil-free, water-based, non-comedogenic moisturizers, i.e., moisturizers that do not clog your skin pores.

What are the natural oil-free ways to moisturize my skin?

Here are some natural options you can try out:

  1. Apply honey to your skin

Honey is one of the best natural moisturizers for the skin and it is oil-free.

It is a natural humectant which makes it perfect for keeping your skin moist but not oily. Humectants draw moisture from your skin to help keep it moisturized. It traps moisture in your skin.

It is also one of the most revered natural skin remedies. it contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties which can help treat skin conditions like acne.

To use honey, just apply a thin layer all over your face. Leave it in for about 15 minutes and then, rinse off thoroughly with warm water.

You can also apply honey with lemon. Mix 2 tablespoons of honey with a drop or two drops of lemon and then apply on your skin.

  1. Apply aloe vera to your skin

Aloe vera is another great natural moisturizer. Not only does it moisturize the skin, it also aids skin healing and protects your skin from damage caused by the UV rays of the sun.

To get the best from this moisturizer, make sure to get fresh aloe vera gel, scooped directly from the aloe vera leaf. Apply the gel on your face, at night, before bed. You can leave it on through the night and rinse off in the morning.

  1. Apply rose water to your skin

Extracts from rose petals, for example, rose water, contain anti-inflammatory properties that help to treat the skin. It is also a great natural toner for the skin. To get the best results from rose water, mix it with aloe vera gel.

To make your rose water, add a cup of rose petals into a saucepan. Add some water to it. Allow it to boil. Then, leave it to cool and strain the solution. Now that you have your rose water, add aloe vera gel to it. Put the mixture in the fridge.

Apply the mix on your face at night. You can leave it on through the night before rinsing off.

To get the best from green tea, dip green tea bags in hot water. Allow it to cool down and empty the content of the bags in a bowl. Add honey into it and apply it to your skin. Wash off after about 15 minutes.
